What You Need To Know About Clinical Depression

Posted January 11th, 2012 by biff

We all hit slumps at certain points in our lives. One moment we’re happy, the next day, we’re not. We attribute this to the “ups and downs” of the cycle of life. But some slumps are harder to get out of than others. Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, the “blues” don’t seem to go away. You can’t quite put your finger on it but you’re listless ad detached. You can’t sleep or you sleep too much, you can’t concentrate, you find yourself bingeing, then feeling guilty. You may be suffering from clinical depression.

If it does then you are in the classic case of depression, which isn’t just a mere case of the blues. Like diabetes, asthma, and heart disease, depression is a medical illness that affects your body, moods, and thoughts. And like these medical cases, you can’t just “shake” depression away like you can’t shake diabetes away. There are ways to treat it as one would treat a medical condition. The first step is actually opening your mind to the possibility that you might be suffering from depression.

At times, people don’t know that they are clinically depressed. There’s a certain amount of denial attached to depression. Clinical depression is incomprehensible to most of us. Pride dictates that we shun sympathy and pity.

If at least five of the following symptoms occur for most of the day, nearly every day for more than two weeks, depression may be present:

  • Depressed mood, feeling sad or irritable.
  • Decreased activity, listlessness or restlessness.
  • Lack of energy for no apparent reason or constant fatigue.
  • Affected sleeping patterns, either sleeping too much or too little.
  • Can’t concentrate, forgetfulness, can’t make decisions, or constant flaking out from made decisions.
  • Change in weight or appetite.
  • Feelings of guilt, hopelessness or worthlessness
  • Loss of interest in activities, such as hobbies or sports, lack of interest in spending time with friends or family.
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

The reason why depression is difficult to diagnose is because the cause isn’t as obvious as with regular medical conditions like diabetes, for example. It’s triggered mostly by events, habits and a multitude of environmental factors. These are stimuli but not necessarily the causes. Clinical depression is caused by an imbalance of certain chemicals in the brain responsible for mood regulation.

College is something all senior high school students are is fretting over. New school, new professors, new people, and an overly new environment may not be the things you want especially if you have been used to going to the same school for years, going with the same people, and being comfortable with everything familiar.

However, going through college is something that is inevitable, well, when you want to graduate and when you want to succeed in life. It is true that college may come off as scary as it is notorious in giving you terror professors, senior bullies, and course subjects that would make you want to cry and scream for help at times, but there sure are things you can do to be able to go through the first semester of college in a breeze. Here are some of those things:

It helps you get away with the bullies and more importantly, it helps the anxiety and the feeling of nervousness to go away because you have friends to experience things the first time with.
  • Seek assistance to your professors or people who are a batch or batches higher than you. They have been in the school longer than you have and it is not bad to seek help from people who know better than you do, at all times. Remember that one way of learning is surrounding yourself with people smarter than you or in this case with more experience than you, so why not make your life easier and seek help from them than trying to figure out things alone?
  • Join extra-curricular activities and various organizations that cater to your interests. This is a great way to expand your network and to enhance your talents, meet new people, and explore your capabilities other than the academic side of it. Organizations are a breath of fresh air form all the studying. Do not deprive yourself of some social fun activities. You are freshmen, there’s no need to fuss over your studies and start becoming overly grade-conscious.

Guidelines for Becoming a Nurse

Posted January 3rd, 2012 by biff

Undeniably, nursing, nowadays, is one of the most popular professions among college students. Many senior high school students are thinking of getting a nursing degree when they set foot in college because of the vast opportunities the profession is offering. But being a nurse is not an easy job and not exactly an easy degree to pass and graduate from. In this article, you would be talked through the whole process of how to become a nurse and the guidelines you may consider to become one.

  • First off, you have to take a degree in nursing offered in universities. Nursing in universities is normally a four-year course of which half of this time will be dedicated to working on hospitals applying what you learn inside the classroom. You will be assigned to different departments, patients, and situations. You will be supervised during the whole time.
  • Upon graduation of the degree, you should take reviews for the local nursing board exam administered by the government. In order to be a licensed nurse and to be able to legally work in hospitals or wherever you decide to, you need to pass the nursing board exam. Aside from that, if you choose to work overseas, there are also nursing board exams to be passed in these countries for you to be allowed to work in their place.
  • If you choose to have a deeper understanding of nursing or if you want to widen the scope of your practice, you can take master’s courses on nursing. You can also take technical programs or midwifery programs if you feel that it is your passion. In these programs, you are required to complete certain number of cases, patients, and other requirements in order to be a licensed one in your chosen field.

Nursing is more than just about knowledge. In fact, nursing needs more passion than knowledge. Passion to take care of others and to do everything that has to be done in order to help other people with their conditions and discomforts.

Private money and hard money are similar in many ways. Both of them are loans based on asset. They are also both backed up by a real property than the financial qualifications of the borrower.  Another thing is that they are also from non-traditional lending institutions. There is just one thing that makes the two differ from each other. While the hard money comes from an institution managed by an organization and are usually licensed to operate, private money are run by private individuals, as the name suggests. They may be a relative, a friend, a co-worker, or someone referred by a trusted person.  Both hard money and private money functions as source of funds for a borrower’s point of view.

Private money can be considered as more informal than hard money. Every details in private money is open for discussion with the lender like the amount of loan to be borrowed, terms of payment, loan duration and even interest rates and other agreements that may seem important in closing the deal. This will depend on how close your relationship is with the borrower.

Private money is also cheaper than hard money. This is because hard money funds are usually from other institutions that is why they have to increase interest rate and create other fees to earn a profit. Private money eliminates the borrower from other charges and higher interest rates because the source of funds is directly from the lender.

One thing is “hard” about private money, they are hard to find! This is not because they are illegal but because they only choose whom to trust with regards to lending their own money. They don’t have the funds to advertise their financing capability. They are usually known through referrals and word of mouth. Hard money lenders advertise their business because the more they have clients, the more they are earning. They also have the funds to advertise their business through websites, flyers, on-site locations, etc.

Whatever option you choose in funding your needs, whether it may be private or hard money, always make sure to face your responsibility as a borrower. Always pay on time to avoid trouble with the lender. Remember that you are destroying your image if you run from your obligations and there may be no more chances for you to seek financial help in times of need.

Is Youth Wasted On The Young

Posted December 26th, 2011 by biff

Ladies, here’s the sad, sad truth: As we get older, we’ll get fatter. It doesn’t matter if we consume fewer calories, we will still get fatter. Here’s why: as we get older, our muscle mass decreases at the same time, our activity level goes down which lessen our energy requirements.  If you used to go shopping for three hours straight without losing your breath, as you get older, shopping for your kids or grand kids will be tough. Ageing lessens our energy needs but our food consumption stays the same, which results in an increase in body fat. Now you know why your mom’s formerly 18-inch waist as well as her hips becomes bigger as she ages. A healthy lifestyle can make a difference.

If you’re now reading this and screaming “Oh my God, I’m next!!! Here are some advices that can save you from the attack of the giant abs.

  • Be more active and start lifting weights now. Doing so will increase your muscle mass. You may not be able to prevent weight gain as you get older, but at least the added pounds will go to the right places. Being more active now also lowers your risk for the 875 or so diseases you become more susceptible to as you grow older.
  • It is better to eat more mini meals during the day than a few heavy ones. Consuming smaller amounts of food at more frequent intervals allows your body to burn the calories more efficiently. It also boosts metabolism, as opposed to bingeing on one meal and starving yourself for the rest of the day.
  • It is good to know that most people don’t skip breakfast because it is the most important meal of the day. It is important because it refuels the body wit energy burned while sleeping. Yes, your body burns energy during sleep. If you don’t replenish that energy by eating breakfast, it may lead to unhealthy snacking during the day.
  • Eat healthy foods. Don’t skip lunch and dinner but try to eat as healthy as possible, in moderation. Avoid junk foods and go for more natural food and drinks like fruits and vegetables.

Having a healthy lifestyle isn’t complete without regular exercise. Eating healthy food is just half of the battle. Don’t forget to drink plenty of fluids before, during and after the exercise.

How To Cure The Headache From Hell

Posted December 20th, 2011 by biff

Whether you suffer from pounding temples, a throbbing skull, or a dull, torturous brain buzz, this article will help you find relief from your head banger. When it comes to headaches, women get hit harder than men. But while your initial instinct may be to grab a bottle of the nearest pain reliever when that first twinge of pain arrives, combating heinous head bangers is often more complicated than that.

The key is finding out specifically what trigger the type of headaches you get most regularly so you take the appropriate steps to stop them.

A tension headache. Everyday stress, anxiety, fatigue, poor posture are the causes of this type. It gives a viselike pressure that has your head and neck in a death grip. Almost all women have had a tension headache. This is the most common throbber, the one you get after a tough day at work. To get rid of this, know the source of your stress. Find out what’s bugging you, then make a plan with doable goals to resolve – or at least reduce these anxiety inducers. Also, indulge in massage. If you can’t afford a professional masseur, ask your partner for regular rubdowns to loosen knotted muscles and release tension.

A migraine headache. This is caused by hormone fluctuations, certain foods, bright lights and loud noises. It is a whooping pain on one side of the head that renders you useless. Migraines affect millions, mostly women. Women get severe migraines before or during menstruation, when estrogen level fluctuates. Pinpointing and avoiding particular food triggers are a must. You can also try magnesium supplements which helps maintain muscle and nerve function. For chronic migraine, consider daily preventive medication such as anti-depressants, anti-epileptics, beta blockers and calcium channel blockers.

A sinus headache. Telltale signs are tenderness around forehead, cheeks, nose and eyes or a runny nose and fever. It gives a dull, deep pain that pounds away at your temples. Causes include infection and allergies, which can cause swelling and blockage of the sinuses. Sinus headaches affect less than 5% of adults. Moist air prevents sinus passages from plugging up, so buying a humidifier is a must. For a quick fix, take a hot shower; the steam will do the trick. Also see an ENT specialist to rule out structural problems such as deviated septum or polyps.
