Going to the beach this summer is extremely popular among many people. The beach offers a lot of fun activities to do like swimming in the deep blue seas, strolling through white sandy coastline, hottie spotting, beach bumming and etc. There are also endless events beach goers can participate. But going to the beach is not all fun and games. The threat that the sun poses to the skin is really dangerous. The ultraviolet rays are harmful to your skin and would like cause skin cancer if you are exposed to too much sunlight. But you don’t have to be stuck all summer long in your house. You can still go to the beach but you will have to make some necessary precautions to protect your skin from the scorching sun.

Don’t forget to bring umbrellas, sunglasses and hats. These accessories go a long way in protecting you from the harmful ultraviolet rays.

Take vitamin supplements to enhance your immune system.

Drink at least 8 glasses everyday to keep you hydrated. Dry skin will make you susceptible to sun damage.

Never pull sunburned skin. Your burnt skin will exfoliate on its own. Let nature take its time.

Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 and above before you expose yourself under the heat of the sun. Thoroughly apply sunscreen over exposed areas.

You should avoid drinking alcohol and stop smoking cigarettes. Not only are they dangerous to your health but they are detrimental for the skin.

Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen after you go swimming. You should also avoid swimming between 10 am to 3 pm. These times, the sun’s shine will be most harmful to your skin.

A well balanced diet is a good protection against the sun’s heat. Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables to boost your body systems.

With the busy lifestyle of people nowadays, more and more people do not get enough sleep and exercise. Much worst, they suffer from relationship problems, financial challenges, work stress and family discord. People who are stressed should eat healthily, get enough sleep and have regular exercise. Doing enjoyable activities and relaxation is also an important aspect of relieving stress.

Listening to meditative sounds will give you a sense of calm and peace. It also relieves emotional and physical distress. Relaxing can truly relieve stress, and by relaxing, we do not mean lying down on a couch while having wine or pizza. There are simple relaxation practices that you can do effectively and easily. It is safe and convenient and can be done anytime you feel stressed.

When stresses, one way to relax is by closing your eyes and taking deep breaths and then imagine that you are in a calm and peaceful place. The place can be anywhere you want and as far as you can imagine for as long as it is a relaxing and calming place. Stay in this moment for a few minutes. Do this activity whenever you have time but never do this if you are busy on something like driving. Ignoring stress can lead to harmful effects and eventually to behavioural and emotional disturbance. Physical effects of stress includes sweating, secretion, increased heart rate and blood pressure, shallow and rapid breathing, and tight muscles.

Stress is unavoidable and undesirable. It is important to relax to avoid reaching harmful effects. Different people react to stress differently. Stress management can moderate the stress that we feel especially if it has built up already. If we keep on ignoring our stress, stress level will rise during the day. Doing some relaxation techniques can lower stress level and help bring it back to normal – eventually eliminating stress in our life. The secret to manage stress effectively is to know the stress level that we are experiencing and then resorting to relaxation for to lower our stress level resulting to proper dealing with stress and its effects.

The next time someone in the family gets an ailment, look to your kitchen, not your medicine cabinet, for relief. There are a lot of unexpected benefits from many of the foods we eat every day, and get well soon.

Ease stomach aches. When a meal causes an ache in your stomach, try a peppermint shot; it can help relieve abdominal pain. A cooling agent known as icilin triggersa receptor in the colon that numbs the area. Give yourself a cup of peppermint tea, or ask your physician for the peppermint-oil capsules. Because nobody wants to be deprive of good foods.

Curing a cough. Treating any disease through chocolates is really good, and studies shows that an ingredient in chocolate known as Theo bromine is an effective cough suppressant– even better than codeine-based syrups. It is good to take and snack an ounce or two of any chocolate of your choice.

Fix your forgetfulness. We all suffer those times wherein you walk into a room and then suddenly you forgot what you came in for. Chewing on green peppers or celery. Two vegetables that are high in luteolin may help enhance your retention according to a study. Scientist found that feeding mice with luteolin helped fight aging in the brain and improved memory.

Bad breath habits. A cup of tea may be more superior in keeping gums for fighting bad breath. Go for black or green teas, it contains compounds that destroy bacteria inside the mouth, freshening early exhalation. Or offer some to your close-talking co-worker.

When late snack cravings hit, it’s easy to think another bite or scoop won’t hurt. But a review from US Dietary habits found that snacking new accounts for 25% of all calories consumed, averaging about 580 calories a day. And when researchers from UNC at Chapel Hill looked at more than 30 years of eating patterns, they identified between-meal munches as the top culprit in the rise in American’s calorie intake. So snack wisely. Fill in nutritional gaps (like having yoghurt for calcium. Choose real, filling foods and remember to count snacks as part of your calorie budget.

There are moments when life’s challenges and pressures can become difficult to cope with and in the process, bring about anxiety. A good night’s rest may prove elusive, or during the day, a bout with nervousness can interfere with carrying out work and other activities normally. These occurrences can lead to restlessness, heart palpitations and shortness of breath, nausea and sometimes trembling. So profound can these symptoms be when they occur that they can be assumed to be indications of some form of neurosis or psychosis. But certainly, they can be neither. Rather, they may be glitches in the sense of well-being as a result of legitimate worries that arise. To help cope with these feelings, Mother Nature has created something that may fix those once in a while jitters.

Valerian, a natural, mild, calming agent, could be a solution. Valerian a perennial flowering plant that is native to Europe and some temperate parts of Asia. It is tall with hollow stems that bear leaves and fragrant white or reddish flowers. The parts of the plant that contain medicinal components are the rhizomes and roots. These are harvested in September of the second year’s growth and then carefully dried at temperatures less than 40 degrees Celsius. One thing that is conspicuous about Valerian is its pungent odour, one that’s akin to the smell of dirty socks. Nonetheless, users don’t mind it because the benefits far surpass the other.

Scientist believed that valerian increases the amount of amino acid called gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) in the brain. Anxiety disorders likeseizure disorders, panic attacks, and other conditions such as headaches, addiction, Parkinson’s disease and cognitive impairment are all relate to low GABA activity. Normal levels of this amino acid help regulate nerve cells and have a calming effect on anxiety, and thus were also found to reduce muscle tension. These properties have been attributed to the action of valerenic acid, the plant chemical contained in the essence of valerian. Prescription drugs like benzodiazepines work on GABA in the same manner but produce much more potent effects.

While small families are ordinary, it is still difficult to face the fear that you are somehow damaging your only child by not giving him sisters or brothers. Only children or “singletons” have had a bad reputation since at least the 1890s when they were said to be self-centred, spoiled, bossy, lonely, and generally maladjusted. Those types of stereotypes have stuck around for all these years, but they were based on flawed research. Many of studies have now refuted these findings that there is not one truth to any of them. They have found that only children are no more likely than any other child to be selfish, lonely or antisocial.

Partly, that may be a reflection of changing times. Early views of only children as damaged come from the notion of a mother being at home all day with one child and the idea that this frustrated, isolated mother would somehow warp her child’s development. But that doesn’t describe today’s families and whether modern moms are employed or not, young children have plenty of chances to interact with other kids at playgroups, child care, or preschool.

In many ways, it is a luxury to support only one child. Research even shoes that only child may have a small advantage in terms of academic achievement. Only children may learn vocabulary early because they spend a lot of time talking to adults. It is also possible that parents of only child have more money to put away for college or spend on extracurricular classes or lessons.

No matter how much parents continue to debate the pros and cons of having an only child, the bottom line is blissfully simple: there is very little distinguishes an only child from one of many. Adults who were raised without siblings tend to have just as many friends as people who come from larger families. They also get married at the same average age and are actually less likely to go through a separation. The kind of person your child turns into has more to do with your parenting style and a whole variety of other factors than the number of siblings she has or doesn’t have.

However, just as parents of larger families have to watch out for pitfalls like favouritism and sibling rivalry, parents of onlies have their own unique obligations. Your child will benefit when you do your best to keep these strategies in mind.

Don’t help too much.

Let your kid be a kid

Beware the little dictator

For 20 years now, April is designated as stress awareness month. For the whole 30 days, health promotion experts and health care professionals will work together to raise public awareness on the cures and causes of modern day stress.

Stress Awareness Month is sponsored by Health Resource Network or HRN which is a non-profit organization that deals with health education. It is a national and cooperative effort to provide information on people regarding stress such as dangers of stress, harmful misconceptions, successful coping strategies and other facts about stress that are common in our society.

Even though there are a lot of learning regarding stress for the past 20 years, there are still a lot of things to discover. There are new facts and studies that are continuously coming that will help millions of people lessen their suffering.

For the whole month of April, most health care organizations throughout the world will develop and spread useful materials and other information regarding stress. Public forums, informative community events, discussion groups and other stress-related activities will also be promoted.

The HRN is a private owned, small non-profit organization set up in Baltimore, Maryland in 1982. It deals with health education and consists of health promotion experts, health care professionals and other educators who commit to develop effective programs to improve health and prevent disease. Aside from Stress Awareness Month sponsorship, the HRN also sponsors the National Stress Awareness Day which is held every 16th of April – the day after filing your income taxes.

On a personal level, Stress Awareness Month is the perfect opportunity for you to assess the stress-factors in your life and learn about how to effectively cope with stress and lessen stress everyday and its effect on your body. The greatest causes of stress are:

relationships

job/work

school

family

money

health problems

Every company has this individual, whose sole purpose is to make sure that things are running buttery smooth for the department. Depending on the luck of the draw, your current boss can either make your work feel like it’s a dream job, or just another miserable day in boot camp. The key to dealing with difficult bosses is to know first what archetype they are.

The Control Freak Boss. He is a constant worrier and can’t stand still without knowing what is happening to a project. The best way to deal with a control freak is to just keep him updated. Bombard him with information on a project and he’ll appreciate it, since he is just concerned with the project after all. With this kind of boss, it’s important to master the art of transparency to build up his confidence in you bit by bit and pretty soon, you’ll be wondering where he went and why he hasn’t shown up yet.

The Escape Artist. He has the uncanny ability to escape being held accountable for a mistake. The main reason why the escape artist blames everyone is to make him look clean to get ahead. The best way to defeat the escape artist is not by joining in on the blame game, but by providing solutions to remedy the mistake. It might help to document anything that goes on with the project.

The Softie. He is generally a good person with good intentions, but lacks the mental fortitude and the assertiveness that it takes to be a manager. Let him know that it is okay to be frank around you, and ask him for feedback or criticisms on your work. That way, the softie will slowly build up his confidence by learning to speak his mind. And when the time comes for a manager’s meeting, he is more likely to defend his department’s decision with his new attitude.

The Whip. This boss thinks that he is God’s gift to the office making him the only competent person in his department. Believe it or not, the whip is often misunderstood. Get him to come out of his tough shell and tell you what his goal is. Establish a rapport, work with him and show him that you are a team player.

Urban living is a jungle of errands, pressure, stress and many more. Time is always on the rush, never caring to look back and see if you are able to keep up; and work has a way of multiplying itself even as you slave yourself trying to accomplish each task it throws your way. There is always something that needs to be done, and with time playing its trick on you, you can’t seem to help it but watch work pile up. Then, all of a sudden, you are already neck-deep with to-dos. As if these are not enough to raise your blood pressure, the bills come in – much higher this time. And then you go to work, and a colleague annoys you. R something bogs down; you must work overtime, the nth time in a row. Finally, you go home to rest, but before that, you have to put yourself to another kind of a mess; one that honks and screeches. Even without looking out the passenger window, you know that the traffic is bad.

When intricacies of life wear you down, here are simple pointers to maintain your focus, and your sanity as well.

Set a time for yourself. To function well, you have to have a time for yourself. Thirty minutes every day may be enough. You can exercise, write a journal, walk, play with kids, whatever that relaxes you.

Be organized. Be organized with your things and your thoughts. Nothing beats chaos better than being literally and figuratively organized. De-clutter, discard the unimportant or unhealthy thoughts. Decide which requires action, and work on them.

Find your own corner. Your corner can be anywhere you can stay to calm yourself down and sort your thoughts. A place where you can find solace when things go wrong.

Develop a positive attitude. This can help us take everything – even the bad. We all go through rough times; the only difference is in the way we approach our problems. Finally, believing that there is Someone up there who sees you through everyday can give you tremendous peace of mind.

Manage your time well. Prioritizing your work and planning well how to go about each day can save us lots of time.
