I played sports as a child. Even when I was in high school I played on the Basketball and the Track and Field teams. I always enjoyed it and seriously tried to get better everyday. The coaches were always kind and supportive and my teams always did well. But nowadays some of the coaches seem to be almost cruel.
I’ve experienced plenty of coaches that have no consistency at all with my kids and it’s been a big disappointment. I’m all for winning but not at the expense of learning about teamwork, commitment and dedication. Sometimes the coaches are so vague that the kids don’t really know what they are talking about either. Even worse than some of the coaches are the parents as they pressure their children so much to be the perfect player or always have to win that it’s not even a fun experience for their kids and in may cases the other kids on the team. I have even heard cases from my own children of their classmates getting grounded or worse for not performing well in games.
I think that this is outrageous. Sports and athletics are meant for fun and enjoyment. These mega-jocks who only care about winning (or their kid winning) are terrible. In my opinion this is just another form of child abuse and it is totally unfair to all the kids that want to learn, experience and play a great game or two.
