CMGs at the Box Office

A lot of people have been talking about the new movie Avatar. Some say that the movie is a cinematic achievement while others are a little less enthusiastic. Regardless of the story or acting, what most people can agree on is that the blue people, the Na’vi, and their alien world of Pandora are beautiful. They are totally lifelike and realistic. Some say that the movie passes the CMG par set by Gollum of the Lord of the Rings and Final Fantasy: the Spirit Within.

I saw the movie and I can tell you; it’s true. The movie is gorgeous. But an interesting thing I noticed was that some video game CMG movies are just as good if not better than Avatar. As long as I can remember I have played video games and when one of those CMG clips would show I would ask myself “why can’t I play with those graphics?” Well with the new XBox 360 and PlayStation 3 games that time is here. But even before the actual game play was this life like, the CMG movies were terrific. What I want to know is why it took so long for that kind of technology to make it to the big screen?

Maybe it’s the greed factor and the companies who made the video games didn’t want the movie makers making money off of their property. Maybe it has something to do with contracts and copyrights. Either way it’s an interesting subject to think about.
