Social Media is a Human Thing

Social media is a wonderful thing for the alienated early 21st century first world inhabitant. Alienation is the word of the day with our overstimulation of consumer items that are force-fed into a vapid and flat revenue driven lifestyle that allows for the pursuit of happiness solely through the accumulation of goods and services. We exist in boxes, the box through the workday and the box where we sleep and seek out entertainment to fill this sad excuse for a life.

Interactive social media such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and the passé MySpace all serve to bring the community together, albeit virtually. Virtual community is better than no community and has its merits to connect a lost individual to something larger than the isolated loneliness of a world predicted by Aldous Huxley and come to fruition by the mindless over-consuming pleasure driven society we’ve become.

The ability to connect to other human beings is a deep need that we as an organism have denied ourselves for too long. Humans are a social animal and we need to satisfy the community that is a part of our being. So, if you are one to scoff at the popularity of social media, take a moment and explore the side of you that craves contact with other people just like you.
